  • Fri, 11 Jan 2008 at 8:13 am · According to this AFP release, JAXA is having difficulties with Daichi — but notes that they’re working on finding alternate uses for the data. I’ve experimented with Daichi data, and I can confidently assure that it’ll have its use in the visualization markets. I’ve also found that it’s actually a more ideal low-resolution source for colorization of higher resolution sources (with typical compromises) such as WorldView-1, SPOT, and IFSAR — to compliment mid to high-resolution regional datasets (where Daichi imagery is acquired). For the Japanese government, the sensor is certainly not a waste in my opinion. · (0)

BigTIFF Development to Break 4GB

May 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Frank Warmerdam notes:
“As announced in this press release, four industry sponsors (WeoGeo, Safe, Leica Geosystems, and ESRI) have gotten together to fund development of BigTIFF support in libtiff. This extension adds support for GeoTIFF files much larger than 4GB! With libtiff used by most open source and commercial applications, there is reason to hope that […]

Redaction Back to the Fore

May 18th, 2007 · No Comments

The San Francisco Chronicle released an article this morning on imagery redaction practices between web mapping applications, and the discussions that have been directly related. A while back, Nikolas Schiller and I discussed discoveries of metadata and imagery redactions present in the USGS database of aerial imagery.

My Natural-Color World

May 15th, 2007 · No Comments

I’ve been asked several times, since it became known that I had converted the entire NASA GeoCover 7,4,2 mosaic to natural-color — what I plan to do with this dataset. Some of those inquiries have been interesting. I thought I’d devote a post here to explain my reasoning for producing the dataset by myself, and […]

Mixing Realities

April 4th, 2007 · No Comments

I’ve explored a number of options in how virtual viewers, such as Google Earth or NASA World Wind, can be enhanced to demonstrate practical or up-to-date visualizations within the model. The visualization space that these applications provide is useful in its own way, but what about that added context of placing a person in a […]

New Landsat Mosaic by GeoSage

April 1st, 2007 · No Comments

I took some time this morning to download and review the new regional Landsat 5 false-color derived mosaics, provided by GeoSage at ~120 meter spatial resolution for non-commercial use. The dataset makes for a nice intermediate resolution, between the Blue Marble Next Generation mosaic made available by NASA, and any 30 or 15 meter higher […]

Got Metadata?

March 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Nikolas Schiller makes an interesting observation on the redactions present between archived aerial orthophotography metadata, distributed by the USGS, between the year 2002 and 2005 distributions. Although this is a practice that I don’t find surprising, as I’ve observed this since September 11th as well, I do have a general opinion on the paranoias associated.
I’ve […]
