- Tue, 29 Apr 2008 at 6:15 am · USGS released updated data-sets that are more informative across the entire CONUS, with their 2008 Earthquake Hazard Maps. Well done — now the public can very easily discern fault activities in areas other than California and the West Coast.

In fact, I dropped ASPRS membership when I was asked to sign a document that approves of this current administration’s outline to make the 2011 Landsat Continuity Mission a commercialized venture moving forward. This shouldn’t be news — this should prompt a clarified explanation as to why it wasn’t set-up that way from day one! I’m still waiting on any reaction to the public being ill informed on the smaller fault-lines and whether the USGS will ever incorporate that seismic monitoring in their datasets — as was highlighted by the recent St. Louis quake. · (0)

They’re basically looking to overturn the Copyright Act and establish a new approach — that essentially orphans anyone’s work, whether you’re an artist, a photographer, or… · (0)
- Fri, 14 Mar 2008 at 4:10 am · I ran across these two map viewers via Mike Migurski, Mike having involvement with both projects — GSV, or Giant-Ass Image Viewer 1.0, a Javascript and Python library that’ll allow one to generate a viewer for a map, provided as Open Source. And Modest Maps, a Flash equivalent provided as a BSD-license offering. Nicest thing to note with the GSV project — Mike includes a PowersOfTwo.py script, something I typically see lacking in most of these similar types of packages. · (0)

Ruzinsky informs me in comments: “I have implemented “gradient domain” seam carving, which eliminates certain kinds of artifacts, in SAR Image Processor v. 3.4 . Example images with artifacts and removal thereof can be found in the SAR manual, http://www.general-cathexis.com/manual2/index.html. SAR is not freeware, but the save disabled demo is free.”

- Fri, 11 Jan 2008 at 8:13 am · According to this AFP release, JAXA is having difficulties with Daichi — but notes that they’re working on finding alternate uses for the data. I’ve experimented with Daichi data, and I can confidently assure that it’ll have its use in the visualization markets. I’ve also found that it’s actually a more ideal low-resolution source for colorization of higher resolution sources (with typical compromises) such as WorldView-1, SPOT, and IFSAR — to compliment mid to high-resolution regional datasets (where Daichi imagery is acquired). For the Japanese government, the sensor is certainly not a waste in my opinion.
