Google Maps Updates, Terrain

November 28th, 2007 · No Comments · Trackback/Ping · Share This

Google Maps has updated with a new hillshaded DEM terrain dataset — which, as you can see below, can also be embedded in your Web page. Flat terrain visualization of this kind can be useful for several content related topics — whether you’re an avid outdoors explorer, camper, mountain biker, or perhaps you’re simply planning a vacation and would like to understand the terrain you might see. Of course, the nice thing is that you can also view any Google Maps location in Google Earth if you click the KML link provided — and gain a more realistic perspective in 3D.

The shading applied to this dataset, I would consider having been produced with ‘European sensibilities’ in approach to representation. The color-scheme is easy on the eyes as it’s not stark or distracting — and certain features are mapped in with a less obscure monochrome color-transition that makes all the features highly readable and useful to the end-user.
