Revisiting Typography Efforts

I’ve been preparing to re-open the typography projects I had taken a step back from a couple months ago. Projects like these, I like to take my time and step away for awhile — mainly to see if my sensibilities might change, if I’ll continue to like the design, or if I’ll be confronted by a slightly different challenge that I may not have noticed previously. And, as in this case, one of the faces ended-up becoming significant to me — and I definitely wanted to see how I’d react to it after a bit of time had passed.

Typography

I had given the naming for that face some long thought as well — attempting to come to a final conclusion in my mind as to what would represent its significance of the concept and process which originated in its manifestation. Coming to it again, I think I’m happy with the name I’ve chosen for that particular face, which I’ve determined to be Somniloquy™, and Somn™ for short.

The definition for the word somniloquy is: uttering speech while asleep, or quite simply, sleep talking. What this represents in the context of the ’sound and vision’ conceptualization, which became somewhat of an accidental realization of the initial design, and which prompted me to pursue it with a more studied approach — is a metaphor for that realization; and toward the visual nuances that suggest sound is presented with structure of Western syllables due to each glyphs’ preliminary structure.

There’s also eight additional typefaces that I created throughout the years (most just decorative) that I never did anything with aside from concepts that I sketched or designed in vector format — and those will probably be produced into final versions eventually as well. Typeface design is more like a creative, fun, and in most cases, intellectual exercise for me; one of several passions in graphics and design, though one of the various things that I do that I apply no time frame to completion.

So — having the latest conversion utilities to convert from PC to Mac will also factor into finalizing various typefaces. It’s possible that I’ll release a typeface or two in the near future, we shall see. Until then, I suppose you can have fun with this neat little thing.
