Image Metadata Extraction, WordPress

November 12th, 2007 · 4 Comments · Trackback/Ping · Share This

Peter Westwood writes about the recent round of developments in WordPress 2.4 — a highlight that jumped out for me is the addition of image metadata extraction. Frank Taylor at Google Earth Blog also forwarded this interesting piece by the New York Times this morning, on the failed FIA government spy satellite program.

Extracting image metadata also caught my eye. I took a look at the ticket, and unfortunately so far, GPS tags in the EXIF data are not included in the fields being extracted.

I noticed that as well. I left a message for Peter on that thread to bring it to his attention — with some reasoning as to why I think it should be considered.

At Peter’s request, I submitted a reply to ticket #5162 to request extending the parser to include GPS metadata tags. I also referenced an existing project, and requested that person contribute, since he appears to have dealt with and had experience with camera models — as well as developing methods that tie-in with existing Web mapping technologies.

    Update:
New trac request (#5353) filed at request not to reopen ticket #5162.

Shot down. Looks like we’ll have to make a plug-in, Doug.
