Festival of Maps Chicago

I finally took some time to sit down and watch a local news show that I enjoy on WTTW 11, Chicago Tonight. Unfortunately, the discussion was centered around the current political leveraging between the 42nd Ward and a proposed Grant Park project by the Children’s Museum — but nonetheless, with the banner and logo in the background, I managed to gain some reference highlights from the formal Festival of Maps announcement.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley had the honor of formally announcing the opening of a citywide festival on the theme of Exploration, Discovery, and Mapping. The Festival of Maps Chicago opens November 2, 2007 and runs into January of 2008.

Explore the Festival of Maps Chicago Web site, where you can view a vast presentation of all that the festival offers, as well as browse neat features, including an interactive festival map. All the information you need for the festival is presented in a well-rounded, well-designed piece — presented as one would only expect from a Chicago designer. (I admit, there’s a little Chicago pride added in that last bit.)

It’d be interesting for me, to see whether this will ignite some nostalgia of Chicago’s historical mapping origins — to help launch a new push in this area. If it turns-out to show promise, I’m sure it’d be easy to imagine the possibility of drawing more support across the industry to centralize additional exhibits each year in the City of Chicago.

You can also follow the Festival of Maps Blog, which I’ll include in the Blogroll section of this site’s sidebar to the right. (I just realized something kind of funny, actually. Microsoft Live Local and Yahoo! Maps are not listed in the Festival Blog’s sidebar.)

And since this event won’t cost me anywhere near a thousand dollars to attend, I think I’ll probably be up to getting down there for this!
