Playing on words for the title in light of Where 2.0, Google demonstrated the technology behind Google Maps Street View — Immersive Media. Frank Taylor includes a video of the demonstration at the conference to share in the crowd reaction, and other important notes.
Previously, I noted another immersive solution that collects imagery in a similar way — from the air using a remotely controlled helicopter rig (or light UAV). One can imagine the potentials of a low-altitude immersive technology being in the mix. Not a bad synergy of immersive content, and considering the similarities between the two. Mix that all in with immersive QTVR tours within buildings, and what you have is a major cross-consistancy in both functionality and appearance, making for an elegant visualization solution in pseudo-3D.
Taking it a step further — and into 3D? Since the Immersive Media solution is geospatially aware — as is the Helicam — the logical step is in using these collections to texture the surfaces of 3D polygons nearly on-the-fly. QTVR interior imagery is really no different in this regard as well.
