Frank Taylor announces the most significant update to Google Maps yet! Google Maps, My Maps, takes the “mash-up” to the next level — allowing full user control in the creation of content for maps through the KML language, and further adding value to true integration with Google Earth!
The potentials for this is nearly limitless. Simply click on the KML link in any of the maps that you’ve created, and the KML file will load directly into Google Earth for viewing in 3D. This new roll-out streamlines wide use for distribution, and enhances cross-integrations between both applications. This could potentially be considered one of the most prolific updates that Google has offered to its users since this journey began.
To explore this new feature, go to Google Maps and click the new My Maps tab — and proceed to enjoy yourself in exploring the possibilities with a very large grin on your face that ultimately hurts your cheeks.
- Experiment Example
I spent a little time creating a shape for the historic Highline, in New York City, and in light of the H&M Highline Festival coming up. Below are examples of a shape map of the Highline created in My Maps, with an example of content annotation.- Google Maps, My Maps version (browser compatible)

Microsoft’s Live Maps Also Updates
The Virtual Earth team at Microsoft has also announced a similar feature in Live Maps — adding support for Windows Firefox users, as well as additional control device functionality.
Unfortunately, since Live Maps lacks support for more operating systems running Firefox (and other browsers), I don’t really care to explore this option until I see such improvements. Some of the added functionalities implemented, however, do look promising.
